This Tuesday I was invited to the Toronto Buckler store to preview their Spring/Summer 2011 collection. Of course, this was no regular presentation – DJ, drinks, two models to dress up into our perfect Buckler man and a photographer to document. Brilliant. I can’t put my own boy in Buckler without instantly throwing my credit card at the nearest cash register and, try as I might, I haven’t yet mastered the art of menswear-as-womenswear as perfectly as April Wozny, so it was nice to have a living mannequin.
The Spring/Summer collection is inspired by the German Bauhaus school and the 1924 Olympics, lending the pieces an old-school collegiate feel. It’s at once modern, but nostalgic for days gone by. True to Buckler style, it’s a balance of “English bloke meets New York” with knee-length shorts, loose tees, and lightweight knits.
The sweaters and cardigans were among my favourite pieces – thin and light, predominantly grey, with saturated blue and red accents. One, solid blue, looked particularly nice tucked under a grey suit. The latter isn’t something I’ve paid much attention to during my previous store visits (shame!) but I spotted them upon entering and became quite enamoured. Once the light grey two-piece was put on Damien, I was sold.
The jacket was shorter and wider than I’m used to seeing – a nice change of pace from the classic men’s suit. And in the smart design category, it includes a discreet strap that lets you wear the jacket unbuttoned while keeping its structure. The pants were slimmer cut, which will look good on those skinny-legged boys who never seem to find the right pant style. The look was styled by the ever-talented Sharad (F.E.M. Founder) and frankly, I couldn’t have asked for a better result.
Other favourites included a black and white plaid suit, which worked great as separates, pointy(ish) two-toned shoes, and of course the off-center buttoned hoodie spotted on store-manager extraordinaire Alex Hood. It’s one of those “looks good on everyone” pieces; a definite must in every guys’s wardrobe.
And now it’s your turn to see the collection up close. The Buckler Spring 2011 Launch Party is tonight!
From 6-10pm, stop by the Buckler store at 700 Queen Street West for refreshments, killer tunes, and of course, shopping.
